Growing up on a farm in Namibia included nursing and caring for a great variety of animals such as: sheep, cattle, horses, chicken, ducks, pigs and dogs.
Besides these, there were guinea fowl, ostriches, warthogs, various antelope, Rock Hyrax (locally called dassies), owls, and Yellowbilled Hornbills that just happened to be around at one stage or another.
Boarding school years, tertiary education at the University of Pretoria, marriage and the cares of motherhood deprived me of interaction with animals for many years, but did not erase my love for them.
When I got the chance, I became active in Nature Conservation at the Etosha Game Reserve. Later I was involved in animal husbandry. Yet none of those activities really brought the fulfillment of direct interaction with a variety of animals like I was used to.
Bound to city life by circumstances further restricted keeping pets. Besides cats and dogs, birds or parrots are the only alternative; that is if the neighbors don’t complain.
Since retirement I moved to the outskirts of Okahandja, a village in the country. Here I am running a safe haven for parrots and unwanted pet birds, without complaining neighbors.
By means of this blog and website I endeavor to advance my vision of
mankind living in peace and harmony with nature.
